What Happens When A Maxi Dress and Romper Have Triplets

Ever since the whole 70’s revival a few years back, bohemian vibes have snuck their way in to almost every wardrobe. Vintage tees, flowy pants, and flare jeans are all very welcome staples in my wardrobe but at what point do you change from Coachella inspired free-spirit and transition into full on hippie-wagon enthusiast?
The maxi dress that started it all:
When I was in early high school, the maxi dress trend flourished. The same girls later found frolicking in flower crowns or now found in hair glitter and body jewels were first seen in the floor length, cotton jersey dresses. A maxi dress and gladiator sandals was the uniform for any “basic bee” nipping the heels of this hot trend.
After that came the romper. This magic new sundress now came with pants. The effortless comfort these articles provided were revolutionary. They eventually leveled up and, of course, were made into midriff-bearing two pieces. A set of shorts and a cropped, strappy tank cut from matching material to create a leveled up ensemble.
The lineage of this trend has seem to have now come full circle. After the early days of the maxi dress, the romper, and now the more current jumpsuit revival we have arrived at a new place. A hybrid of almost all of these trends have now been rolled up into one. The newest wardrobe wannabees are the new, all inclusive, maxi-jumpsuit-three-piece sets.
Yes, you heard me, three pieces. Half of a wardrobe all on one hanger. A matching crop top, cardigan, and pants all hung together and sold as a singular outfit. Were you being driven nuts at the already enormous number of Garanimal-style matching outfits? Was your head spinning and eye twitching trying to absorb the tiny pinstripes and busy prints? Yeah? So is everyone else’s.
When will the all over trend cease to exist? Will we ever go back to the simplistic days of pulling out our favorite pair of jeans, top, and a jacket? All bought separately and made from different textiles.
Well, I would have to say yes. Maybe we will eventually make our way back to this individualistic style of shopping and dressing, but not until this “set” trend manages to screw up or over do itself.
I mean think about it…
What could be better than going to a store and buying a full outfit that has already been completely styled and fashionably assembled for you, ready and waiting to be strutted out of the door.
One hanger. Three pieces. Infinite options.
Even if you are one of the less bold or just simply don’t vibe with the all over print or great-grandmotherly feel of a monotone outfit this trend still works for you. Yes, it is sold as a set meant to be worn all together but who says that’s the only way to do it? Who says you can’t pair the flowy, printed pants with your favorite basic tank? Or the striped cardigan or crop with red pixie pants? Huh? NO ONE! That’s who!
You want to be bold and wear all 3 pieces of perfectly coordinated fashion all at once? Go for it, make the sidewalks your runway! Just get ready to be stopped by the grocery store paparazzi asking for labels and begging you to drop a store name!
Feeling more of the classic look? Take the same pieces purchased together and spread the love. Switch out the navy and white striped shirt with a contrasting mustard yellow to add a fun pop! Pair with office basics to add a touch of personality into everyday go-to’s. Whatever your style is, this trend is for you! The world is your oyster and no wrong can be done.
Yes, this trend might seem like a lot to handle. But trust me, coming from someone who would never think about purchasing prints or be caught dead in stripes now rocks her Free People “Fake It ‘Till You Make It” set like its her job.
Things like these may seem like hyper trendy, over priced items with a short style shelf life may just hold your newest staple piece. I am in full support of this style breakthrough.
Try it on. Take the plunge. Embrace the trend.
